Site Update

Seth here, with a brief news tidbit:

Not that you'd notice or anything, but we upgraded the site today, from v2.0.1 of [WordPress](http://www.wordpress.org), our weblog engine, to v2.0.4. Hopefully, there will be no snags or gotchas.

In other news, thank you to those of you who wrote in to welcome Jake to the MacMove team. It's been only a couple of days since his [official welcome](http://www.macmove.com/mm/archives/site-news/update), but we're already receiving positive feedback from you, our readers, so that's great news. In case you missed the announcement, Jake is now responsible for all day-to-day content here at the MM, so you're going to be hearing a lot more from him and a lot less from me. Stop clapping. :-)

Please keep your how-to questions coming. Jake tells me he has a nice piece in the works and wants more reader questions to get his juices flowing. Stay tuned!

New spreadsheet… will there be more?

Did someone beat Apple out of the gate?

I've heard some rumors that this upcoming WWDC would include the revelation of a new iWork application to handle number data. The idea was that the new application, a spreadsheet, would complete the iWork suite, finally giving users a complete alternative to MS Office.

We don't usually traffic in rumors here at MM, but this is relevant, I promise. You see, I heard that the new app would be called something like "Tables" or "Charts."

Well, *if* the rumors are true and *if* they're correct on the name, then someone in Cupertino may be upset right now because a new application, called Tables and not from Apple, is [now in public beta](http://www.x-tables.eu/more/overview.html).

It looks just like an iApp spreadsheet would look and handles the usual range of calculations and formulas. The major caveat is that is has no charting capabilities at all. Of course, if you're an iWork user, that doesn't matter, since you could easily export the data to either Pages or Keynote for display... but that's neither here nor there.

Check out the beta and let the developer know what you think. Whether there is an application coming from Apple or not, that's the best way to ensure quality software.

ProCare: It’s about time someone noticed

Peter Cohen, over at MacWorld, [writes today](http://www.macworld.com/weblogs/editors/2006/07/procare/index.php?lsrc=mwrss) about [ProCare](http://www.apple.com/retail/procare/), Apple's in-store, extra-special service package. I won't bother telling you the details, since you can read them yourself, but let me just say this: **ProCare is the best deal available at the Apple Store.** If you live within an hour's drive of an Apple retail store and don't already know more than the Mac Specialists and Geniuses who work there, then you owe it to yourself to look into getting a ProCare account.

**Update**: Over at the [PlanetMike Blog](http://www.planetmike.com/journal/2006/08/01/re-procare-ite28099s-about-time-someone-noticed/), Mike picked up on this post and commented:
>The major problem [with ProCare] is you have to get a Procare account for each computer that you want covered. So for my small office of around 20 Macs, we’re talking an extra $2,000/year.

Not true, Mike. This is a common misconception. ProCare accounts are tied to the *user*, not to a computer the way AppleCare is. So a single user (like, say, an IT guy at a small office) can use a single ProCare account to get assistance with many machines. Or, if you ask at your local Apple store, you will find that they offer discounts (not huge ones, but something) on multiple ProCare accounts purchased together.

Update

We've got some big news here at MacMove.

As I hinted at some time ago, I have had to scale way back on my writing here due to a number of conflicts in my personal and professional life. Rather than leave the site hanging in the wind, trying to find the time to update and post when I could, I elected to officially shutter things for a while and seek out a permanent solution to the problem. I'm happy to say that I've found one. Readers, it is my pleasure to introduce you to Jake, the solution.

>Thank you, Seth. It's exciting to join the MacMove team and I'm grateful for the opportunity.

>Seth told me that I should tell you, the readers, a little bit about myself. So, here goes. I am a long-time Mac user and I teach Journalism for a University. In addition to that, I work part-time for a major news organization. My responsibilities as the school include overseeing a building full of Macintosh computers, ranging from PowerMacs running OS 7 up to a couple of new MacBook Pros. I have extensive experience with – literally! – every version of Apple's Macintosh OS and most of the machines they have produced.

>As I understand it, my job here at MacMove is to answer your email and provide in-depth product reviews. Seth must have told me a dozen times that we are not a Mac news site, but I expect a little bit of commentary to slip in to things every once in a while. Oh, one last thing: I once, a while ago, worked in a retail store for a certain computer company we are all familiar with. I'm not supposed to talk about it, but the name of the company rhymes with "Snapple," and that is part of the reason why I'm being so circumspect with the details of my bio (and why "Jake" is not my real name). I don't think I will be doing anything wrong by writing here, but that company (the one that rhymes with "Snapple" and makes portable MP3 players that rock) is really, *really* secretive, so I'm not officially supposed to ever write anything about them.

As you can see, Jake knows his stuff. I was torn about asking him to join us, but in the end, I decided to hire the person who offered the most to you, our reader. So, I'm still here, managing things, but Jake is going to handle most of the writing. If you would like to ask him a question, or if you might be interested in joining the content team here at MacMove, drop us a line using the Contact form. Otherwise, just sit back, buckle up and enjoy... things are going to be fun!

Interruption

As is probably obvious from the posting frequency here at MacMove recently, I have quite a bit going on in my personal life. For the near-future, one of those things requires that posting of new items pause for a while.

I am not sure how long that while will be... but when things sort themselves out or when I know more, I will update you. Until then, all of the content here will remain and you can feel free to use the Search Box to find it.

Sorry to be so mysterious... when I have more information, I will update this post.
